[ Summary ] Gut microbiota dysbiosis may play an important role in the development of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recent evidence has suggested that an altered brain‒gut‒microbiota axis may be key in the pathophysiology of FGID. Although it has been previously reported that patients with IBS or chronic idiopathic constipation show different composition of gut microbiota, it is still unclear which bacteria acts as a pathogen in FGID. Promising treatments for FGID would involve rebalancing the altered gut microbiota through diet, probiotics, antibiotics, or fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).
