[ Summary ] With increasing obese population, bariatric surgery has become common in Western countries. Roux‒en‒Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy have been categorized as bariatric surgeries. These procedures limit food intake by reducing the size of the stomach and rerouting the gastrointestinal tract to suppress digestion and absorption.
In recent years, metabolic surgery has also been proposed for treating metabolic disorders, such as diabetes. Several randomized control studies have shown that using bariatric surgery as a treatment for diabetes is better than medical treatment alone. The foregut and hindgut hypotheses have been considered mechanisms of diabetes im provement ; secretion of gastrointestinal hormones, such as glucagon‒like peptide‒1, in accordance with the change in the digestive tract, improves diabetes. In Japan, cases of advanced obesity are still relatively uncommon;however, the prevalence of diabetes is high. Bariatric surgery can be an important option for treating obese patients living with diabetes.
