[ Summary ] The duodenum is the second most frequent site of intestinal diverticula after the colon and the incidence of duodenal diverticula (DD) increases with age. DD are usually asymptomatic but rarely induce symptoms such as bleeding, infection or perforation. DD are located at the second portion of the duodenum, usually in proximity with the papilla.
Juxtapapillary DD are associated with biliary or pancreatic diseases because of their anatomical location. In case of juxtapapillary DD, the dysfunction of the sphincter of Oddi may lead to pancreatobiliary disease.
