[ Summary ] Antiviral therapy for hepatitis B includes nucleot(s)ide analogues and interferon. Controlling virus growth was made possible;however, it is not possible to completely eliminate the virus, as is the case for hepatitis C. In order to advance the treatment of hepatitis B, therapies for HBV cccDNA, a template for viral growth, and agents with different mechanisms of action need to be developed. Many drugs are currently in the clinical development or pre‒clinical development stages to help achieve this goal. In this review, the trends in the development of nucleotide analogue prodrugs, siRNA targeting the transcripts of HBV, capsid formation inhibitors, entry inhibitors, a TLR‒7 agonist, and therapeutic vaccines will be outlined.
