[ Summary ] The ultimate goal of antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B is HBs antigen clearance. A finite duration of therapy with pegylated interferon could achieve high rates of HBs antigen clearance among responders ; however, the percentage of responders is limited to 20 % to 40 %. Entecavir and tenofovir administration could achieve a high rate of HBV DNA negativity, meanwhile the rate of HBs antigen clearance is also high in tenofovir treated patients. In patients with a suboptimal response, combination therapy using tenofovir plus entecavir or lamivudine is recommended.
