Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) was developed to detect small pancreatic cancers in 1980. Since then, the images produced by EUS and monitors have greatly improved. The clinical significance of radial EUS is apparent in the detection of small lesions and staging of gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary malignancy. However, histopathological diagnosis of pancreatic cancer by guided fine‒needle aspiration (FNA) using convex EUS resulted from the limitation of imaging diagnosis. Furthermore, therapeutic procedures using EUS‒FNA, such as pancreatic cyst drainage, neurolysis, and biliary‒pancreatic drainage have been developed, and are widely used. In the future, EUS imaging diagnosis, EUS‒FNA, and related procedures will be further developed and widely accepted for interventional EUS. |
