[ Summary ] Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder that may be triggered by enteric pathogens and has been linked to alterations of the microbiota and infectious events. The pathogenesis and pathophysiology of IBS is complex and is not completely understood. The role of the gut microbiota is still being elucidated ; however, it appears to be one of several important factors that contributes to the etiology and pathophysiology of IBS. In this section, the roles of infectious events and alterations in microbiota in IBS are broadly reviewed.
