[ Summary ] Recently, it has become possible for the pathophysiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) to be evaluated using several neuroimaging analyses. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) show more cerebral activation during painful colorectal distensions in the insula, anterior cingulate, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, which may be associated with nociceptive, emotional, and/or cognitive regulations. More reliable and validated neuroimaging analyses are warranted to clarify brain‒gut interactions in FGIDs.
