| [ Summary ] | Gastrointestinal motility dysfunction, visceral hypersensitivity, and psychosocial stress are considered important basic factors that are involved in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but do not sufficiently explain IBS symptoms. New areas of research, including altered microbiota, dietary factors, genetic factors, and inflammation, are currently in progress, which may lead to the development of a more specific, individualized treatment strategy for IBS patients in the near future. | |
