[ Summary ] Functional dyspepsia (FD) was covered by Japanese insurance in 2013, and medical guidelines for the disorder were published by the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology in 2014. According to many previous reports, the pathogenesis of FD is associated with multiple factors however, there is no comprehensive study detailing the exact association of these factors with FD. Abdominal symptoms usually occur despite no histological injury in patients with FD, and therefore, they may originate from a functional disorder of the stomach or duodenum. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the physiological functions of these organs in patients with FD ; among these physiological functions, gastrointestinal motility and acid secretion including mucosal sensitivity of the gastrointestinal tract, are likely to have important roles in the pathogenesis of FD. These points are presented in this section.
