[ Summary ] The purpose of PillCam Patency Capsule (PPC) is to confirm the patency of small bowel before CE can be performed. While there are reports about the usefulness of PPC in patients with Crohn's disease (CD), the indications for PPC in patients other than those with CD are unclear. We performed PPC in 17 patients without CD but with suspected small bowel stricture. Of the 17 cases, seven had bowel wall thickening, five patients had abdominal surgery in the past, three had prolonged NSAID use, and two patients had a history of ileus. Small bowel strictures were detected in three (18 %) of the 17 cases. Two of these strictures were found in patients with bowel wall thickening, whereas one was found in a patient with prolonged NSAID use. Based on these results, we recommend the use of PPC before CE in cases with bowel wall thickening involving the small intestine and in those with prolonged NSAID use.
