| [ Summary ] | Capsule endoscopy can be used in patients with Crohn's disease who exhibit luminal patency with a patency capsule. However, the evaluation of patency may be difficult if the patency capsule remains in the body. In some cases, it is difficult to distinguish the presence of the patency capsule in the small intestine or colon with abdominal radiography. Capsule endoscopy is useful in the evaluation of the degree of improvement after treatment because of its high sensitivity. However, it is not a reliable diagnostic test for Crohn's disease because of its low specificity. Complications such as retention of capsule and intestinal obstruction may also develop, and should be avoided. Hence, the patency capsule and capsule endoscopy should not be used in patients with obvious intestinal stenosis. | |
