| [ Summary ] | We reviewed biliary drainage methods and timing for treatment of acute cholangitis based on the Tokyo Guidelines 2013. Many cases of acute cholangitis occurred due to choledocholithiasis and the guidelines recommend first performing endoscopic drainage. However, institutional resources and the common drainage methods used at each institution should dictate drainage methods and timing. New biliary drainage methods (single or double balloon enteroscopy assisted ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound assisted biliary drainage) have been described, but these new methods should only be performed at tertiary referral hospitals with experienced staff. | |
