[ Summary ] Since 1990's, the prevalence of gastro‒esophageal reflux diseases has increased mainly due to the decreasing prevalence of Helicobactor pylori infection. The westernization of our diet are factors related to increasing obesity. The majority of patients with gastro‒esophageal reflux disease respond to treatment with proton pump inhibitors, although approximately 20 % do not. For these difficult cases, further investigation of the pathogenesis and the development of new treatment strategies is necessary. A food related allergic disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, has increased with the increase of other allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma. Establishment of clinical therapeutic guidelines will be necessary for appropriate treatment of this new type of disease.
