[ Summary ] Due to continuing progress of therapeutic procedures and introduction of intensive care, patients with nutritionally compromised conditions (such as malnutrition or overnutrition) can safely undergo surgical treatment. In addition, much scientific evidence is shown in recent years with regard to nutritional management in the perioperative periods, and clinical guidelines for such management are issued by concerned medical societies. In this overview, current concepts of perioperative management in digestive surgery patients are summarized into 5 points 1) Avoid fasting period, 2) Avoid overfeeding, 3) Avoid hyperglycemia, 4) Avoid artificial nutrition, and 5) When the gut works, use it. Perioperative management aims to improve patients' prognosis by increasing their postoperative recovery capacity. In recent years, approaches based on scientific evidence have been practiced as enhanced recovery after surgery using existing medical and technical expertise (but not using new drugs or devices) for the perioperative management of digestive surgery patients.
