| [ Summary ] | Short bowel syndrome (SBS) refers to the clinical consequences resulting from loss of small bowel absorptive surface area mainly due to surgical massive resection. Clinical course of SBS is generally divided into 3 periods ; period-I, II and III. Nutritional management is routinely required according to each period and patient condition : total parenteral nutrition is fundamentally essential in period-I, enteral nutrition is proceded in period-II, and oral intake of food or supplyment is progressed in period-III in order to weaning from parenteral nutrition. Finally, in the case of oral food intake cannnot supply enough energy and nutrients, home enretal nutrition or home total parenteral nutrition will be introduced. | |
