[ Summary ] When treating gastrointestinal disease, parenteral nutrition is a very important therapeutic treatment modality. However, there is a tendency to exclusively select enteral nutrition as the primary form of nutrition management. Although enteral nutrition should be chosen first, there are a great number of cases for which parenteral nutrition is preferable. To deliver parenteral nutrition effectively and safely requires a high level of nutrition management. TPN can not be delivered by using a TPN solution kit alone. It is necessary to understand the composition of TPN solutions, to exactly calculate the energy provided per dose, as well as amino acid levels in a given dose. It is also necessary to prescribe fat emulsions, vitamins, and trace elements for individual patients. In order to deliver parenteral nutrition effectively, it is extremely important to manage TPN infusion systems under strict parameters to guard against catheter-related bloodstream infections.
