[ Summary ] In recent years, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma arising from Barrett's esophagus has been increasing steadily in Japan.
In this review, we describe endoscopic findings and diagnosis of superficial Barrett's esophagus-related cancer based on cases we treated.
Careful endoscopic screening is absolutely necessary for diagnosis of this condition. It is quite important to understand the features of Barrett's esophagus-related cancer and to carefully observe changes in color, as well as irregularities in the esophageal mucosa. Because the esophagogastric junction is an anatomical stenotic site, observation of the entire esophagus should be conducted. In addition, magnifying observation with narrow band imaging is essential for qualitative diagnosis. A diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus-related cancer through observation of the presence of irregularities in the surface vessels and overall surface structure of the mucosa suggests the presence of Barrett's esophageal cancer.
