[ Summary ] The Japanese Clinical Diagonostic Criteria for Chronic Pancreatitis was revised in 2009 by the Research Committee on Intractable Pancreatic Diseases. This revision was supported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan, the Japan Pancreatic Society and the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology. The revised criteria are unique in that they contain an introduction to concepts concerning early chronic pancreatitis. The challenge is to improve long term prognoses for chronic pancreatitis patients through early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of this disease. We need to determine and clarify the clinico-pathological outcome of early chronic pancreatitis through prospective long term follow-ups of patients in this category
