Title Protein-energy Malnutrition and Effects of Late Evening Snacks on Liver Cirrhosis Patients

[ Summary ] The liver plays a central role in nutrient and fuel metabolism. Thus, protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is common in patients with liver cirrhosis. Protein nutrition is conventionally evaluated by determining serum albumin levels. Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) administration raises serum albumin levels and improves QOL and survival rates for patients with liver cirrhosis. Energy nutrition is evaluated by examining respiratory quotients (RQ), arm muscle circumference, arm circumference, and serum free fatty acid levels. Treatment with late-evening snacks (LES) improves RQ, liver function and QOL. Because there is a possible risk of energy excess by administration of LES, periodic nutritional nourishment instruction by a certified dietician is essential.
