Publish Date 2014/03

[ Summary ] According to an article by the Japan Gast Study Group published in The Lancet in 2008, eradications of H. pylori reduced the incidence of metachronous gastric cancer by one-third. Since February 2013, eradications for H. pylori has been covered under the Japanese health insurance system for patients with gastritis induced by H. pylori infection. The rate of incidence related to metachronous gastric cancer in non-eradicated patients was three times higher than that of eradicated patients in a 12-year followup study in the Yamagata Prefectural Central Hospital. Endoscopists must educate patients about the benefits of having regular follow-up gastroscopies, before H. pylori eradication treatment.
