[ Summary ] Antithrombotic agents (antiplatelet and anticoagulant agents) are widely used in patients with cardiovascular disease. These include anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation, prosthetic valve complications, and venous thrombosis, as well as antiplatelets for arteriosclerotic disease including angina and myocardial infarction. Antithrombotic agent administration is associated with increased risk of bleeding, especially gastrointestinal bleeding. However, discontinuation of antithrombotic agents is related to increased risk of thromboembolic complications. There is little evidence on the safety or duration of discontinuation when non-cardiac surgery or procedures are needed during antithrombotic therapy. It is important for gastrointestinal and cardiovascular physicians to cooperate to the greatest extent possible in medical care for patients taking antithrombotic agents.
