[ Summary ] There have been increases in the elderly population in Japan, and the implementation of guidelines for management of anticoagulant and increased use of antiplatelet therapy for cardiovascular disease. The number of people who take anti-thrombolytic agents is also increasing. Administration of anticoagulants and antiplatelets was suspended during endoscopic treatment to prevent hemorrhagic complications. Cessation of drugs increases the risk of thromboembolism. As a result, Western guidelines stress prevention of thromboembolism over the risk of continuous bleeding. An organization known as the "Examination Group for the Temporary Cessation of Safe Antithrombotic Treatment" was organized by clinicians using antithrombotic drugs in combination with gastroenterology departments in the Sapporo region to prepare the criterias known as the Guidelines on the "Temporary Cessation of Anticoagulants and Antiplatelets Administration" also known as the "Sapporo Consensus".
