[ Summary ] 571 gastric cancer patients who were seen at our cente were classified before treatment using the ABCD method, a combined system for detection of serum anti-H. pylori antibodies and measurement of serum pepsinogen. The percentage of patients classified as being in group C, or the high-risk group, was 53.1 %. The number of patients classified as being in group A, or the presumably low-risk group, was 11.6 %. The rate for members in group A with early cancers was lower than that of any other group. ABC classification is considered to be useful for diagnosis of highrisk groups. However, the accuracy of this method is not high enough to dispense with image based tests.
