[ Summary ] The serum pepsinogen test was introduced in 1991, and subsequently gastric cancer-risk method using combined assay for serum anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG antibody and serum pepsinogen (PG) levels (ABC method) was followed as a primary mass screening for gastric cancer at a work place in Tokyo. The follow-up data from this screening method indicates that ABC method is likely to detect PG-negative gastric cancer in the early stages. It may also be used to efficiently diagnose both intestinal type and diffuse type gastric cancer in the form of mass screening for employees. However some problems remain with the ABC method. Therefore, further consideration is necessary to adopt this screening method as a widely-distributed mass screening technique for gastric cancer.
