[ Summary ] This is a review of the actions of both forms of ghrelin on acid secretion and a comparison of these actions. Ghrelin, a GH-releasing peptide, is well known as an orexigenic hormone. Recently this peptide has been demonstrated to have a stimulating action on gastric acid secretion. However, of the two forms of ghrelin, desacyl ghrelin is not fully understood in terms of its actions and roles in-vivo. Studies comparing the actions of acylghrelin and desacylghrelin, on acid secretion and histamine production in the stomach have been conducted. The physiological roles and significance of ghrelin in the secretion of gastric acid are reviewed.
