[ Summary ] Kampo medicine or traditional Japanese medicine is a system of medicine that derived from traditional Chinese medicine and developed uniquely in Japan. Many studies have been conducted in recent years to explore the potential of Kampo medicines as viable treatment options. This has been done bye lucidating their pharmacologic effects concerning individual constituents. Kampo medicines are currently used routinely in a variety of clinical settings, most notablyas agents for the reduction of side effects induced by chemotherapy. Recent pharmacologic studies emphasize the promising effects of Kampo medicines as supportive therapies for chemotherapy for the alleviation of peripheral neuropathy, myalgia, loss of appetite, diarrhea and oral mucositis.
