[ Summary ] Treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) may be accomplished through administration of herbal medicines. These medications may be prescribed without specialized training. Herbal medications have been shown to be efficacious in clinical practice in Asia. They have also been shown to be beneflcial in various studies conducted in Western nations. The pharmacological mechanisms of herbal treatments have been scientifically elucidated through evidence based studies. These developments have made the use of herbal medications easier to implement. Because of these advances in traditional Asian medicine it is thought they may be used for disease treatment as are medications developed in the Western world.
