[ Summary ] Pharmacological therapy using "’Kampo medicines" “is one characteristic of Japanese medical treatment. This is based on a fusion of modern Western and traditional Asian medical practices. Accordingly, in daily clinical practice, numerous Kampo medicines are prescribed for patients at various institutions. Internal medicine and surgical departments employ these blended treatments to improve therapies for diseases or to minimize symptoms. Chronic gastritis is a common gastrointestinal disease. Many kinds of drugs have been tried to treat patinets with this condition, including Kampo medicine. Current therapeutic approachs employing Kampo medicine and evidence concerning its efficacy and pharmacological actions for chronic gastritis are presented.
