[ Summary ] Herbal medicines created in China 4000 years ago have been imported into Japan and reborn as unique, potent "Kampo" Japanese herbal medicines. This occured after the creation of diagnose based on abdominal patterns and the standardization of extract granules."Kampo" treatment is performed through use of a combination of "Kampo patterns". These are based on traditional "Kampo" diagnostic techniques and "disease-oriented Kampo" methods. These methods are based on diagnose formulated through use of Western medicine. Specialists in individual fields will be able to develop new treatment methods for various diseases which are difficult to treat with Western medicine if they master orthodox "Kampo" diagnostic techniques. Mechanisms of action for "Kampo" formulas have recently been clarified in Japan especially in the field of gastroenterology. Clinical evidence supporting "Kampo" medicine may also be created rapidly if new statistical methods to verify the usefulness of "Kampo" are implemented.
