[ Summary ] Unlike the colon, the lower rectum and anus are histologically and functionally diverse, all within a range of approximately 10 cm. A variety of disorders occur in the lower rectum and anus, all of which greatly affect patientsʼ quality of life. Endoscopy involves examination based on an understanding of these anatomical characteristics. Conventional endoscopy is used to determine the color and shape of lesions, as well as other details. Diagnosis is made by combining findings from chromoendoscopy, magnifying endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound examinations.
