[ Summary ] In Japan PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) is classified into two categories : (1) the Pull/Push method and (2) the introducer method determined by whether a catheter is introduced throuth the oral cavity. At this time the Pull/Push method accounts for nearly 60 % of the procedures performed. The Push method is employed 5 % or less of the time. Prior to the introduction of PEG, gastropexy to prevent misinsertion and adverse effects associated with removal of catheters was performed widely in 3-or 4 locations. Various cases may be adapted to this approach. It is especially recommended for cases with resected stomachs, when it is necessary to insert into the small bowel or when the abdominal wall is very thick.
