[ Summary ] Carcinoids, named by Orbendorfer in 1907, were later shown to be neuroendocrine in character. In addition, neuroendocrine tumors were observed in various organs, and revealed various malignant potentials. According to the 2010 WHO classification, a method to evaluate the malignancy potential of tumors in relation to mitosis and/or the Ki-67 index has been exhibited. The expanse of tumors may be evaluated using the TNM classification system. Nuclear grading may be used to estimate cure and convalescence rates in terms of both degree of differentiation and the degree of tumor progression, as would be done for other forms of cancer.
