[ Summary ] Scirrhous gastric cancer is frequently diagnosed in advanced disease settings. Many cases concurrently have multiple metastases which result in forms of organ dysfunction such as GOO (gastric outlet obstruction), large bowel obstruction, biliary obstruction and ureteral obstruction. Since 2010, in Japan, endoscopic self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) placement for GOO and diseases of the large intestine has been covered by government medical insurance. Considering the recently reported benefits of combination chemotherapies for advanced gastric cancer, multimodal therapy, including SEMS placement, holds the promise of improving prognoses for patients with scirrhous gastric cancer.
