[ Summary ] Fifty cases of linitis plastica type gastric cancer were pathologically, radiologically and endoscopically analyzed in an attempt to provide earlier diagnosis. The results obtained are outlined below.
Pathological analysis suggested (1) that the primary focus of linitis plastica cancer occured at the fundic gland area in 23 cases. It was a IIc-like carcinoma of the poorly differentiated type and was less than 25 mm at its largest diameter with a depth of ulceration in the focus deeper than Ul-II degree. (2) It was also noted that the primary focus of linitis plastica gastric cancer occurring at the intermediate zone in 27 cases, was IIc-like carcinoma of the poorly differentiated type in 18 cases and a mixture of differentiated type in 9 cases. There was a focus of more than 50 mm in the largest diameter samples, often accompanied with UL-I degree depressions. Early diagnosis of linitis plastica gastric cancer could well be made by the detection of these cancer lesions.
