[ Summary ] Scirrhous gastric cancer is a form of cancer which often presents with a poor prognosis. The characteristic endoscopic findings of scirrhous gastric cancer are poor extension of the gastric wall and morphological changes in gastric folds, occurring as a consequence of diffuse infiltration of carcinoma cells and fibrotic tissue. Some inflammatory diseases also exhibit these findings ; therefore, it is important to differentiate benign diseases from scirrhous cancers. Although histopathological findings are essential for definitive diagnosis of scirrhous gastric cancer, some scirrhous cancers are difficult to diagnose using biopsy specimens. Thus, the lesions which are suspected of being scirrhous cancers should be observed with care even if the histological findings show them to be benign.
