[ Summary ] The ultra-thin endoscope, originally developed for transnasal endoscopy, has been applied to direct cholangioscopy since it is very slender and flexibile.
Since insertion of ultra-thin endoscopes into the bile duct is difficult, various devices have been developed to overcome this problem. Our approach is to use endoscopic mechanical lithotripsy, followed by insertion of an ultra-thin endoscope. This method is very useful for assessment and treatment of residual bile duct stones. It is expected we will find smaller bile duct lesions when insertion into the bile duct is technically improved by employing high resolution ultra-thin endoscopes. More advanced devices are required to provide safe, effective diagnosis and treatment of bile duct-related diseases.
