[ Summary ] To provide premedication of transnasal EGD patients, various techniques are implemented. In addition to a nasal drip of a vasoconstrictor, peroral administration of a mucolytic agent is recommended for administration of any premedication. Methods for administering nasal anesthesia are classified into three categories. The first is the stick method, using a catheter coated with an anesthetic agent.
The second is the spray method, using an anesthetic agent with a spray pump.
The third is the injection method, using an anesthetic agent with an injection syringe.
The spray method and the injection method are simple and easy to use. The stick method is troublesome and sometimes produces nasal pain or discomfort when the catheter is inserted. The stick method enables a stronger anesthetic effect than other methods. One of the two catheters used in the original stick method is not employed by our department. Dependent on individual circumstances, the proper nasal anesthesia method should be selected. To do this we must consider the anesthetic effects and total amount of anesthetic agent necessary. It is also important to explain to patients the nasal anesthesia techniques which will be used. Good safety management techniques, using clinical pathways, must be a part of our examination systems.
