[ Summary ] In studies of atomic-bomb survivors, radiation-associated increase in liver cancer risk has been observed. Risk factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, and radiation are associated with development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as well as various other cancers. To estimate the effects of radiation on HCC risk after adjusting for major risk factors such as hepatitis virus infection and lifestyle-related factors, we conducted a nested case-control study using stored sera from the longitudinal cohort of atomic-bomb survivors. This study indicated that radiation exposure was associated with increased risk of HCC, independently of hepatitis B and C viral infection or lifestyle-related factors. Furthermore, radiation exposure was a significant risk factor for non-B, non-C HCC, with no apparent confounding by lifestyle-related factors.
