[ Summary ] Portal vein thrombosis develops with a relatively high incidence in patients with liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. However, treatment strategies for portal vein thrombosis is still controversial because of the complex and diverse pathophysiological conditions of patients. Anticoagulant therapy is a first-line treatment for symptomatic portal vein thrombosis. However, variceal bleeding must be watched for in patients with portal hypertension. New antithorombotic agents with low risks of bleeding complication are strongly expected to be applied for the treatment of portal vein thrombosis.
