[ Summary ] There has not been a great deal of improvement in medications to treat portal hypertension. A great number of ascites are associated with portal hypertension. Decompensated cirrhosis often reduces patient quality of life (QOL). The purpose of peritoneo-venous shunt procedures is to decrease ascites. However, it is not a therapy for treatment of the primary disease. States of portal hypertension may have an additive effect on this condition. This is because water moves directly to the right atrium in the early postoperative period. Ascitic pressure may increase in a rapid fashion, as does central venous pressure (CVP). Ascitic pressure decreases gradually along with CVP, due to increased diuresis. The quantity of fluids in the patient's system decreases when portal blood pressure decreases.
