[ Summary ] Preparations for Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE) require fasting for 12 hours and going without water for 3 hours before the examination. Preparations for Double Balloon Endoscopy(DBE)using the oral route are the same as those for VCE. Patients are administered a solution of sodium picosulfate hydrate and eat a low-residue diet the day before DBE via the anal route. A polyethylene glycol electrolyte lavage solution is employed on the day of the examination. Because of the extended time required to carry-out DBE and the suffering and pain experienced by patients, analgesics and sedation are required. We use midazolam and pentazocin as intravenous premedications. The examination is performed while monitoring respiration and circulation, since the premedications may cause respiratory depression and decreased blood pressure.
