| [ Summary ] | The main role of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for gastrointestinal disease is for staging of gastrointestinal tumors and diagnosis of subepithelial lesions. At present, EUS is the most accurate locoregional staging test for gastrointestinal tumors. The reported diagnostic accuracy of depth of invasion and lymph node involvement by employing EUS for gastrointestinal cancer and lymphoma is 69-95 % and 50-90 %, respectively. EUS provides clear imaging of the gastrointestinal wall layers and precise evaluation of subepithelial lesions whether from extrinsic compression or from the layer in which the intramural lesion originates. However, differential diagnosis of subepithelial hypoechoic solid masses using EUS imaging alone is very difficult. Histological approaches using EUS-FNA are the only way to obtain conclusive diagnoses of such conditions. | |
