[ Summary ] It is very important that when performing ultrasonography (US) screening we do not overlook any lesions because the liver is the biggest parenchymal organ. There are reasons we may experience difficulties when performing US examinations of the liver, such as rough internal echos in cirrhotic livers. Moreover, the distance from the surface to the deepest portion is generally more than 10 cm. Different conditions between intercostal and subcostal scanning also exist. Thus, it is quite difficult to examine the entire liver by conducting only one US setting. For these reasons, it is very important for the US diagnostician to understand optimization of US settings. In this report, we describe factors concerning settings, protocols and skills necessary for the US screening of the liver.
