[ Summary ] Ultrasound (US) is one of the best screening modalities, because it provides a low-cost, noninvasive, safe examination modality. On the other hand, it has fundamental technical drawbacks which may easily diminish the accuracy of screening. For this reason, we need to minimize those drawbacks to maximize the outcome of US screening of the abdomen. US should be performed in a standardized way by a screener with adequate skills at performing upper and lower abdominal US examinations. We describe the essential skills required for US screeners and the essential techniques necessary for standardized US screening of the abdomen. We also explain in concrete terms how we may reveal and observe individual organs in the upper and lower abdomen.
