[ Summary ] It would not be an overstatement to argue that ultrasonography has the best spatial resolution of the great number of diagnostic imaging techniques. This technology allows us to develop detailed tomographic views of the organ of interest. With this imaging technique, diagnosis can be made in real time. The imaging devices can also be transported in and out of hospital wards. Ultrasound procedures are among the least invasive laboratory techniques as well. We experienced clinical cases in which we are able to diagnosechole cystitis as soon as an ultrasound probe is placed on the abdomen of patients with abdominal pain. This diagnostic method is termed, ultrasonic palpation. It cannot be duplicated using any other clinical device. With the proper knowledge of ultrasonographic techniques, we can use this remarkable medical device to great advantage in daily clinical practice.
In this article, to promote understanding of abdominal ultrasound, wediscuss ultrasound visualization of anatomy and explain ultrasound terminology, as well as elucidate the basics of ultrasound devices.
