[ Summary ] Ulcerative colitis (UC) is associated with a variety of intestinal and extra-intestinal complications which can influence quality of life and mortality of patients. Patients with long-standing extensive UC are at increased risk of developing colitis associated colorectal cancer. Recently, several cases of UC with gastroduodenitis have been reported. UC can be considered to be a systemic disease since cases are often associated with extra-intestinal complications which can involve almost any organ. Common sites of extra-intestinal complications are the skin, joints, eyes, liver and biliary tracts, as well as bone, and vascular systems. The majority of these complications accompany underlying diseases and are influenced by disease activity. Therefore, long-term remission maintenance therapy is essential for prevention of these complications.
