[ Summary ] Childhood onset ulcerative colitis is different from adult onset in terms of several clinical aspects. Children have a high incidence of severe type illness, and even when it occurs in a mild form, it often rapidly progresses to one of the more severe forms of colitis. Half of the children progressed to develop extensive colitis during follow-up. For children, intensive medical treatment including appropriate systemic management, is important during the acute phase of illness.
It is important to recognize that children are in the process of growing and therefore long-term treatment with steriods, which can cause growth disturbances, should not be continued for long periods of time.
Above all, treatment of children with ulcerative colitis requires a medical treatment plan different from that for adults.
