[ Summary ] The progression of ulcerative proctosigmoiditis involvement was assessed endoscopically and histologically. Progression beyond the SD-junction was observed in 15.6 % of patients with proctitis, and 33.3 % of those with distal colitis. Within approximately one year extension was observed in 72.7 % cases exhibiting progression. As previously reported, a follow-up study indicated that proctosigmoiditis could be divided into two categories ; one was limited in the rectum for extended periods, the other was early phase involvement, with progression to exensive colitis.
