| [ Summary ] | The unique concept of NOTES (natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery) has attracted immense interest in Japan. Japanese use of NOTES began in 2007. A registry system was then established for basic and clinical studies to encourage the responsible development and adoption of NOTES into clinical practice. The clinical application of NOTES in Japan began in 2008. Up to this time, seven clinical studies have been conducted and human NOTES procedures have been performed on 148 patients. Uses of this procedure include transgastric peritoneoscopy for preoperative cancer staging, transvaginal endoscopic local resection of the stomach for gastric GIST, transvaginal cholecystectomy, peroral endoscopic submucosal myotomy for esophageal acalasia and laparoscopy-assisted endoscopic full thickness resection of the stomach. NOTES procedures have been steadily evolving and further developments are expected in Japan. | |
